Cayman Islands cricket history has a familiar ring to it, similar to other West Indian countries. From 1940, cricket was played in these islands on mud or marl pitches. Most matches were played between the districts of West Bay and George Town. Matches were organised to coincide with visits from Royal Navy ships. In 1970, a competitive league involving five teams began. In 1973, a ground and pavilion was developed and named Smith Road Oval. The venue is now referred to as the Mecca of cricketing excitement in Cayman Islands.
The fast development of the Cayman economy through the tourism and financial industries, brought large numbers of expatriates and among them, many cricketers. The league was expanded and this increased the profile of the sport. A school team was then included as more boys began playing. In 1996, cricket joined five other sporting disciplines in a group of focus sports. The Government appointed a coach to assist the local association in reorganising its constitution and implementing a development programme and by 1997, Cayman Islands was accepted as an Affiliate Member of the ICC and progressed to Associate Membership in 2002.
Cayman Islands' national team first entered regional tournaments in 2000 as an Affiliate country competing against the Associates: Argentina, Bermuda, Canada and USA. Some of the outstanding achievements in the country's brief history are participating in the West Indies regional one-day tournament in 2000 against Guyana, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands and Bermuda; achieving first place in the ICC Americas Affiliate tournament held in Jamaica in 2001 involving Bahamas, Suriname and Turks and Caicos and coming in fifth place winning the Plate tournament in the World Cup Qualifying Tournament Division 5 in Malaysia 2005.
Cayman Islands achieved fourth place in the World Cricket League Division 3 in Darwin, Australia 2007, before competing in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 3 in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2009 placing fifth. Cayman Islands will participate in ICC Americas qualifying events.
