An economic report released today by the International Cricket Council (ICC) reveals that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, generated an incredible total economic impact of USD1.66 billion for the local economies in the USA and West Indies.
The World Cup took place between 1 – 29 June 2024, with 55 matches played across nine locations in the USA and West Indies. In the USA, Nassau County, New York, Grand Prairie, Dallas, Lauderhill, Florida played host, whilst Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago staged the matches in the West Indies.
The event proved to be a catalyst for growth across various sectors, contributing to the development of local economies highlighting the power of ICC events.
Investment into the local economies through transport improvements and hotel facilities which delivered direct benefits to local businesses across a range of sectors was a key outcome, just as the stadium enhancements through direct investment by the ICC, Cricket West Indies and local governments will benefit the next generation of cricketers.
The USA saw a total economic impact of USD618.4m hosting 16 of the 55 matches across three venues. In the six Caribbean countries, Barbados saw USD428m economic benefit, followed by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at USD224m and Saint Lucia at USD132m. The combined total for the remaining three West Indies host locations of Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago was USD259.6m.
With the influx of international attendees and domestic visitors to host locations, there was an increase in spending on accommodation, travel and food and beverage. The number of nights international visitors spent in each country varied, but Barbados was the top performing location for fans enjoying a longer stay where 50% of visitors spent more than five nights. The injection of visitors in Barbados amassed a total food and beverage spend of USD22.9m. The Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA recorded a total F&B spend of USD52.9m.
The event saw high exposure of host countries and cities through iconic locations, branding on team kit and verbal mentions, generating a media impact of USD92.5 million for businesses and stakeholders.
Overall, between 49% and 74% of visitors said they would be returning to the host location they visited, which resulted in a future tourism impact of USD36.6m.
