Anti-Doping in Cricket - Reflection and Planning
Effective education and risk-based testing remained the focus of the ICC’s Anti-Doping program in 2022.
Approximately 63 teams across ICC Events, Asia Cup, and a range of cricket teams/groups in Zimbabwe received in person education in 2022. Anti-doping resources were also developed and made available on the ICC website.
The ICC’s risk-based testing program in 2022 delivered 531 tests across bi-lateral cricket, ICC Events and to a lesser extent around domestic cricket. Of the testing carried out, 73% were non-match day, no advance notice, out-of-competition testing and 25% accounted for testing in women’s cricket. With reduced COVID restrictions worldwide in 2022, the ICC was also able to recommence blood testing.
Two anti-doping rule violations were reported from ICC’s testing in 2022. This resulted in a nine month ban for the use of a diuretic and a ten-month ban for the use of a banned substance in the Hormone and Metabolic Modulator category. Further details on these violations are available on the ICC website.
To fully appreciate and reflect on cricket’s anti-doping activities in 2022, the ICC surveyed its Members. Seventy three percent of members responded and below are the key findings from the survey–
- 48% of Members have organized for their players to receive anti-doping education.
- 97% of Members found the ICC’s anti-doping resources to be useful.
- 60% of Associate Members requested further assistance on education.
- 55% of Associate Members have existing relationships with their National Anti-Doping Organisations (NADOs) and 30% sought the ICC’s assistance in building these relationships.
In 2023, the ICC in addition to delivering a full anti-doping program, is committed greater efforts to building anti-doping awareness and education. Webinars will be organised for the benefit of Associate Members and additional digital resources developed to support members in educating players and support staff. NADOs have an important role to play in the delivery of anti-doping education and the ICC will work to assist Members in building those valuable connections.
