Australia finalise Ashes squad, include Alex Carey

Carey edged fellow 'keeper Josh Inglis in the squad, who will feature in the Australia A squad to take on the England Lions.

Australian Chairman of Selectors George Bailey said Carey's experience for Australia in limited overs formats, on top of his strong first-class record, makes him the ideal candidate for the role vacated by Tim Paine.

“Alex has been a regular member of the national side in white ball cricket, particularly in the one-day game.

"He is an excellent cricketer and a fine individual who will bring many great strengths into the team. He will be a very deserved holder of baggy green cap number 461.”

Thirty-year-old Carey, with more than 80 appearances for Australia in white ball cricket, averages over 50 across the last two seasons in Sheffield Shield cricket, and has been heralded for his glovework across the three formats. Despite the hype of a much-anticipated series, Carey believes his attention is solely on helping Australia keep the famous Ashes urn.

“I am incredibly humbled by this opportunity. It’s an exciting build-up for what is a huge series ahead.

"My focus is on preparing and playing my part in helping Australia secure the Ashes.

“I will be doing my absolute best to make them and our country proud.”

Australia's XI for the first Test looks mostly decided, with recently-appointed captain Pat Cummins blessed with a team of talent and experience.

Usman Khawaja and Travis Head look to be jostling for the final spot in Australia's top six, while Jhye Richardson is making a late claim for his inclusion over Mitchell Starc.

Michael Neser and Mitchell Swepson join Carey as players yet to make their Test debut, though neither are expected to make the final XI.
