Buttler's controversial ‘Mankad’ run out – best of the reaction
The spin bowler noticed that the England wicket-keeper-batsman was advancing out of his crease before he had released the ball, so he stopped in his action and removed the bails before lodging an appeal. The review went upstairs before the third umpire confirmed Buttler's fate on the big screen.
That Buttler Mankad... Did Ashwin do the right thing? 🤔#IPL2019

It was the second time Buttler had been dismissed in this fashion; Sri Lanka twirler Sachithra Senanayake run him out at the non-striker’s end in an One-Day International in 2014, with Alastair Cook accusing Sri Lanka of “crossing the line”.
There are, of course, stated rules about these things. The MCC's Fraser Stewart laid it all out quite clearly.
Law says n-s must be in his ground until when "the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball." Hard to tell from this one replay but front foot had landed with JB still in his ground and there's then a delay until wicket is put down. Would like to see full vid.

Here's the Law: 41.16.1 If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out.

The confusion here is when is the moment that R.A. would normally have been expected to release the ball? Might need superimposed footage of earlier released deliveries to actually tell. The old adage of 'watching the hand for release' is not a bad one - only leave after release.

But opinions interpreting the laws differently flooded into Twitter, with many players, ex-pros and commentators offering their views on the controversial run out. Here's a selection:
So disappointed in @ashwinravi99 as a Captain & as a person. All captains sign the #IPL wall & agree to play in the spirit of the game. RA had no intention of delivering the ball - so it should have been called a dead ball. Over to u BCCI - this a not a good look for the #IPL

As Captain of your side - you set the standard of the way the team wants to play & what the team stands for ! Why do such a disgraceful & low act like that tonight ? You must live with yourself & FYI - it’s to late to say sorry Mr Ashwin. You will be remembered for that low act https://t.co/jGif2TOnjI

I am hearing a lot of talk about spirit of the game. This law specifically came in because, taking recourse to this very "spirit of the game" batsmen were running 6 inches less to complete a run.

My opinion on the Buttler/Ashwin controversy is that its NOT Buttlers fault and its NOT Ashwins fault either
— Scott Styris (@scottbstyris) March 25, 2019
Ashwin is entitled to appeal
I thought the TV umpire made the incorrect decision
Shouldve been dead ball..... play on
I can’t believe what I’m seeing!! @IPL Terrible example to set for young kids coming through. In time I think Ashwin will regret that.

The Mankad is so so wrong. Terrible sportsmanship IMO #IPL #RRvKXIP

Lots of drama on the Buttler run-out. He was livid but the law and the advisory on it is clear. The bowler is within his right to run a player out at the non-striker's end if he is out of his crease

Ashwin Mankads Buttler

Within the rules of the game? Fair play? Would you have done it? You decide.

Buttler has been Mankaded. 🙁

That was a brilliant 43-ball 69 from Jos the boss. #RRvKXIP #RR #HallaBol
I never had a problem with bowlers running non-strikers out if they stray out of the crease before the ball is bowled; the question in this case would be if Ashwin waited for Buttler to get out of the crease
