Classic ODI matches at CWC 2011 venues - Bengaluru
Bengaluru will host four matches in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Here we look back at five classic ODIs to have been played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Dias century not enough
India completed a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka with more than 10 overs to spare as the hosts made themselves immediately at home in the stadium's first ODI in September 1982. Visiting batsman Roy Dias claimed the distinction of being the first player to score a limited overs century on the ground - having done the same just 11 days previously at the Feroz Shah Kotla - but Kris Srikkanth's 92 off 83 balls saw his team a large part of the way to their target of 234.
India prove too strong
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium played host to one of India's matches in the group stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup 1987, against New Zealand. Navjot Sidhu (75) and Kapil Dev (72 not out) were chiefly responsible for India totaling 252-7 after being put into bat. Ken Rutherford (75) and Andrew Jones (64) gave the Kiwis hope but wickets fell regularly from 146-2 and they ultimately lost out by 16 runs.
India defeat old foes
India fans have cause to remember the stadium fondly as the stadium their team defeated Pakistan at in a ICC Cricket World Cup quarter-final in 1996. Despite 93 from Navjot Sidhu, India seemed likely to post a par score of around 250 until Ajay Jadeja set to work. The middle-order batsmen took 22 off an over from Waqar Younis to lift India to 287-8 at the end of their 50 overs. Aamer Sohail (55) and Saeed Anwar (48) got Pakistan off to a flying start in reply but no later batsmen could surpass 38 as the Indian bowlers put the squeeze on. Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble each took three wickets in the 39-run victory.
Mahmood shatters India
Pakistan's one-day team were a force to be reckoned with during the late 1990's - evidenced by their runner-up position in the ICC Cricket World Cup 1999 - and they were far too strong for a Sachin Tendulkar-less India in the Pepsi Cup final of April 1999.
Azhar Mahmood claimed the second best figures at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium - 5-38 - as India could only manage 168 in pursuit of 291. Pakistan's total had been forged on a third-wicket partnership of 94 between Shahid Afridi (65) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (91) with the middle order all chipping in with useful contributions in the latter stages.
Pollock fireworks not enough
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium had the distinction of staging the first in the historic three-match ODI series between an Africa XI and an Asia XI in 2007. A packed house were treated to a feast of entertainment from some of the leading players of two continents. Mahela Jayawardene and Mohammad Yousuf both posted half-centuries to set Africa the daunting figure of 318 for victory. At 31-5 the match seemed in danger of falling flat, only for Shaun Pollock to launch a fearsome riposte with 130 off 110 balls. Despite useful tail-end support, the South African was the last man out with his team still 35 runs short of their target.
