End of India’s winning streak under Virat Kohli in bilateral ODIs

Kohli was handed the reins of the Indian limited-overs teams following MS Dhoni’s resignation from the post in January 2017, less than half a year from the start of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

While India did exceedingly well under Dhoni, the performances and the record remained solid even after the change of guard. So much so that under Kohli, India went on a spree of six straight one-day international series wins, the run coming to an end on Tuesday, 17 July, in Leeds when England beat them by eight wickets in the third and final game to win the series 2-1.

It was also India’s first bilateral series defeat since early 2016, when they lost 4-1 in Australia under Dhoni, making it a run of nine series wins overall before going down.

India in bilateral ODI series since January 2017

January 2017 (India) India beat England 2-1 in a three-match series
June-July 2017 (West Indies) India beat the Windies 3-1 in a five-match series
August-September 2017 (Sri Lanka) India beat Sri Lanka 5-0 in a five-match series
September-October 2017 (India) India beat Australia 4-1 in a five-match series
October 2017 (India) India beat New Zealand 2-1 in a three-match series
February 2018 (South Africa) India beat South Africa 5-1 in a six-match series

Outside of the bilateral exchanges, India have taken part at the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in this period, reaching the final before going down by 180 runs against Pakistan.

There was also one series in late 2017, against Sri Lanka at home in December, which India won 2-1, but Kohli had been rested for that series, and Rohit Sharma led India to the trophy.

Even before Kohli became the full-time India captain, there were various points at which he filled in for Dhoni. His performance as captain in these games wasn’t poor either, giving him a pretty special overall record.
