‘Fantastic effort to back up the world record’ – Sophie Devine

After scoring a match-winning 61-ball 108 in New Zealand’s second one-day international against Ireland Women, Sophie Devine said she was pleased with another “complete performance” by her side – New Zealand have now won the two games by 346 and 306 runs respectively.

Devine marked her return to the side, a chance she was “craving” for, with the fastest ODI century by a New Zealand woman as her team amassed 418.

“It was probably a little bit slow to start in the grander scheme of things, but I was happy to get out there and spend a bit of time in the middle,” said Devine. “That's something I've been craving for, especially watching the girls during the last couple of games.

“You get in the zone and you don't think about how many balls you've faced or runs you've scored. It's more just getting on to make sure that your team keeps the total ticking over. It's pleasing to put in a knock like that, but definitely, I wasn't counting balls.”

New Zealand, who made a world record 490/4 in the previous game, took their batting momentum into the second of three ODIs.

“It is really pleasing again,” said Devine. “Another complete performance by the girls. The bowlers went there and did the job. It is always nice to get a win like this. A fantastic effort to back up the world record we had in the last game – to score over 400 again is no mean feat, which is awesome for the girls.”

Devine praised the overall performance of the side, especially the bowlers, who have bowled Ireland out for 144 and 112 in the two games.

“It is something that we have spoken as a team, to be really aggressive, and I think we saw that throughout the game,” Devine pointed out. “With Lea (Tahuhu) and Holly (Huddleston) being brought back into the side … they tried to take some wickets. But a lot of credit to spinners, who have done a great job in terms of their variations and some of the fielding out there was fantastic today.”
