Haidee Tiffen ‘very disappointed’ after 142-run reversal

Amy Jones and Heather Knight scored contrasting 63s and Georgia Elwiss, Natalie Sciver and Laura Marsh shared eight wickets between them to help England hand New Zealand a whopping 142-run defeat in the first One-Day International of their ICC Women’s Championship series.

“Very disappointed,” New Zealand coach Haidee Tiffen said afterwards. “We had been playing some good one-day cricket over the last 12 months. Full credit to England, they played very well and put a lot of pressure on us.

“We didn't execute our plans with the ball, and losing wickets in clumps really shifted the momentum over to them, and there were some soft outs.”

Most of the New Zealand bowlers were expensive, Amelia Kerr the notable exception with her 2/36 from 10 overs. But with England putting up 290/5 in their 50 overs, it was always going to be a steep chase for New Zealand.

Suzie Bates (28) and Sophie Devine (33) did give New Zealand hope at the start with a 70-run first-wicket stand, but after that, the rest of the wickets fell quickly as they were bowled out for 148 in just 35.3 overs.

“Mellie (Kerr), she came on and did a really good job for us. Jess Watkin too, when she got the ball,” said Tiffen.

“It's good to see some fight in the unit. We've just got to keep looking forward and keep learning.”

The second match of the series will be played on Tuesday, 10 July in Derby.
