The 20-year-old believes that "the added responsibility will be of great benefit" in enhancing her all-round game at the multi-nation tournament.

โ€œI am very delighted that the hierarchy of Cricket West Indies see me as a good fit for vice-captain," Matthews said. "I think the added responsibility will be of great benefit to my overall game. It will be an amazing feeling to play in front of home fans here in the West Indies.โ€

She will be deputy to Stafanie Taylor, who led the Windies to their maiden World T20 title in India at the 2016 edition of the tournament. Matthews was an integral part of the campaign and played a match-winning knock of 66 in the final against Australia.

โ€œHayley is young, but very confident and knowledgeable about the sport," said Taylor. "She is someone who can lead from the front, with bat and ball, and encourage her teammates to raise their game in varying situations.โ€

Matthews is No.2 on the MRF Tyres ICC Women's T20I Rankings for all-rounders, behind only her skipper, who is at the summit of the chart. She is amongst in the top five in the bowling rankings, sitting in the third position behind Australia's Megan Schutt and India's Poonam Yadav.

The Windies begin the defence of their WWT20 title against Bangladesh at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Saturday, 10 November.
