How captain Bumrah’s message rallied India back in the Test against Australia

After being bowled for 150 on Day 1, India mounted a strong comeback with the ball as the stand-in skipper led from the front with a five-for.

Jasprit Bumrah had his task cut out after India were dismissed early on Day 1 of the Border-Gavaskar series in Perth.

But the pace spearhead, who was captaining the side in place of full-time skipper Rohit Sharma, offered a clear guideline to his fellow pacers that helped the visitors turn the tide and register a big win.

“Sometimes when you are bowled out for a lower score, you can be a little too desperate and you could go pole hunting and try too much to get wickets. When you try too much, it doesn’t work here,” Bumrah said on the back of India’s 294-run win on Monday.

“So the message was, 'be nice and disciplined and we’ll make run-making as difficult as we can' because that is what has worked in the past over here as well. When we are able to do that, it gives us a lot of success."

The Indian bowlers managed to bowl out the Aussies to 104 on Day 2, before the batters took charge to set up an imposing total.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was playing his first Test in Australia, scored 161 – an innings constructed over 297 deliveries faced over two days.

Bumrah, who was deemed the Player of the match, said that if it were up to him, he’d have named Jaiswal for the honour.

“After a disappointing first innings, this was his best Test knock so far because he has an attacking nature but in that second innings, he left certain balls as well. He took his time and batted deep. So that gives us a lot of confidence,” Bumrah said.

“He has an attacking game, but he has patience as well and he’s ready to adapt to changes. That’s a brilliant and positive sign for us in Indian cricket that a batsman is able to adapt that early in his career."

The skipper also showered praise on batting talisman Virat Kohli, who nailed his 30th Test ton – seventh in Australia – to cap off a dominant batting display as India posted a total of 534.

“I’ve said this before as well, Virat Kohli doesn’t need us, we need him," Bumrah said. "He’s an experienced player, this is his fifth tour to Australia. He knows his game more than anyone else. He was looking in good shape, he was mentally switched on.

“Sometimes, when you have this big a career, and you bat in tough scenarios as he has, to turn up every game and perform isn’t easy. But he was looking in a really good space (pre-series). He got a good delivery in the first innings but he was still in great space and he capitalised on it in the second innings.

“When he gets confident at the start of the series, you can’t ask for more than that.”
