McMillan's present contract with the team is set to end after the marquee tournament, which will be played between 30 May 30 and 14 July, and the former New Zealand batsman has announced that he won't be extending the deal.

"It's been an amazing experience and one I've immensely enjoyed," McMillan said. "To help coach the national team on the world stage has been a real honour and I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with so many good people and in such a great environment.

"I'll certainly miss the job, but I'm excited to pursue some other coaching opportunities and of course spend some more time at home with the family."

McMillan was with the team during their memorable run in the previous edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and Australia when they reached the final – the best result yet in their history. It's hardly a surprise that McMillan picked that tournament as one of his career highlights.

"To be involved in such an incredible World Cup on home soil and see the way the country embraced the team was really special," he said.

Under McMillan's guidance, the New Zealand batting developed into a formidable one with the likes of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor improving further. Younger batsmen like Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls too developed under his tutelage.

"It's been a privilege to be able to work with the likes of Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor day-in and day-out and to see the records they've accomplished has been very satisfying; as has the development of younger players like Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls."
