After a half-hour absence, Bumrah left the ground in India training gear, to undergo scans.
Post-match, India's Prasidh Krishna revealed the fellow fast bowler was dealing with back spasms.
“He is going to see some doctors, gets scans … we will know more in a little while,” Indian great Ravi Shastri said on Fox Cricket's broadcast as news came to hand.
“We just had a feeling he wasn’t well.
"This could have a massive bearing on the series."
Virat Kohli is leading the team in Bumrah's absence.
Bumrah has bowled 152.1 across the nine series innings, picking up 32 wickets at 13.06. He passed Bishan Bedi's record for most wickets taken by an India bowler on a tour of Australia, and was approaching Englishman Maurice Tate's 100-year record for the most wickets by a foreign player on an Australian Test tour, where he claimed 38.
Bumrah missed a year out of the game across 2022 and 2023 with a stress fracture in his back. He underwent surgery in New Zealand for the injury.
