Mayank Agarwal's journey to the top

A 28-year-old batsman who has done well in the IPL and recently made his Test debut, Agarwal adds some experience to the squad. Here are three key moments in his rise:

Shades of class

Agarwal, who modelled his game on Virender Sehwag as a youngster, caught the eye at the 2010 ICC Under-19s World Cup by being India’s leading run-getter in a competition where the likes of Babar Azam and Josh Hazelwood also starred. India reached the quarter-final stage, before falling to rivals Pakistan.

Triple threat

Having already earned a positive reputation in the IPL, Agarwal illustrated his penchant for the longer format with a stupendous Ranji Trophy triple-century for Karnataka against Maharashtra in November 2017. Coming into the game on the back of a pair, Agarwal flipped the script completely to deliver an unbeaten 304 off 494 balls that included 28 fours and four sixes.

Up to the Test

Knocks such as that one catapulted Agarwal towards India’s Test fold and he quickly took advantage upon being given an opportunity in Australia at the back end of 2018. Opening the batting, he struck 76 in his first innings – the highest knock from an India debutant in the country – and ended the series with 195 runs from two outings at an average of 65.
