Mehidy Hasan Miraz optimistic about Bangladesh’s transition period, eyes 2027 World Cup

All-rounder believes there is enough experience in the Bangladesh team to manage the transition period following the departure of several stalwarts in the white-ball setup.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz is optimistic about Bangladesh's cricketing future, believing there is enough experience within the squad to navigate the ongoing transition period following the recent retirement of key senior players.

The 27-year-old all-rounder, with over 180 appearances across formats for Bangladesh, is set to take on a senior role in the side. He has urged the more experienced players in the team to step up to fill the void left by the veterans retiring, most recently Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmud Ullah and Tamim Iqbal.

"Currently, there are six to seven players in the team who have been playing international cricket for 7-10 years. They can’t be considered new anymore," Mehidy told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on March 15.

Bangladesh were knocked out of the Champions Trophy 2025 in the group-stage, ending their campaign with two losses and a washout in their three games, and a third place finish in Group A.

With the country yet to win a major ICC tournament, the all-rounder stressed the need for forward-thinking strategies, particularly with the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in mind.

"It’s a process. We must make decisions now and stay committed to the long-term vision. With two to two-and-a-half years left until the World Cup, we need to start preparing the team immediately.

"Consistency in selection is key. Starting preparations just two or three months before the tournament will make it very difficult," he added.

According to Mehidy, a well-coordinated approach with a long-term plan is crucial to sustainable success for Bangladesh and highlighted the team's responsibility to build upon senior players’ legacy.

"Players like Mushfiqur bhai (Rahman) and others from the previous generation have served the team for 7-8 years, leading Bangladesh cricket to new heights.

“Now, we have also been around for a long time. Our goal should be to elevate Bangladesh cricket to the next level.

"The previous generation laid a solid foundation. Our task now is to take it forward."
