Mominul Haque's record tenth century an historic moment for Bangladesh Test cricket

Mominul has quietly become a legend of Bangladeshi cricket. The diminutive batter’s performances in the white-ball game mean he may not always receive the plaudits lavished on some of his team-mates. But, with a well-judged quick single on the fourth day in Chattogram, he reached his 10th Test century to underline his quality in the longer form of the game.

That run - as he pushed a flighted delivery from Rahkeem Cornwall towards cover - saw Mominul beat Tamim Iqbal (on nine Test hundreds) to the landmark, and ensured that the unsung hero of the Bangladesh batting line-up for once took his place in the spotlight.

The knock was important from a match situation too, with Mominul arriving at the crease with his team two wickets down for just a single run and threatening to throw away their strong first-innings advantage.

“He has set the game really well for us, so we are very pleased with the way he is playing at the moment,” said coach Russell Domingo at the close on day four. “He has been fantastic. In the last Test in February last year, he got a hundred against Zimbabwe in Dhaka. And he has backed it up with another good hundred today.”

Records may well change hands regularly in Bangladeshi Test cricket in the coming years, with Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim all vying to be the nation’s leading run-scorer at present. But Mominul may well turn out to be the best of the lot in the red-ball game.

Since he made his debut against Sri Lanka in Galle back in 2013, nobody has scored more runs for Bangladesh than the 29-year-old. And his current average of 41.68 is better than any Bangladesh player since the country’s introduction to Test cricket.

While he may occasionally lack the panache of his famous trio of team-mates, Mominul has made himself into a very awkward player to bowl to – something that Rahkeem Cornwall found to his cost in Chattogram.

“I think he hangs back a lot, forcing me to bowl a bit fuller and bowl to his strengths,” the big West Indian spinner said. “He plays spin well.

“We just have to keep working. There's another Test coming up so we know how we’re going to have to bowl to him."
