Mott steps down as head coach of England Men's white-ball team

Matthew Mott left his role as the England Men's head coach after two years in the office.

The ECB confirmed that Mott had stepped down from his role with immediate effect. Mott's last engagement at the helm was England's campaign in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, where the then-defending champions crashed out of the semi-finals after losing to India by 68 runs.

England had an indifferent start to the tournament, losing to Australia in the early stages, before picking themselves up and reaching the semi-finals. However, they failed to make it past Rohit Sharma's side.

England lift the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 trophy after beating Pakistan by five wickets in the final.

After he was appointed in May 2022 as the head coach of the England Men's white-ball outfits, Mott enjoyed immediate success, leading the team to their second Men's T20 World Cup title in Australia that year. After early hiccups, England unleashed their best in the business end of the tournament, beating Pakistan by five wickets at the MCG to lift the trophy.

Under his leadership, England achieved white-ball series victories against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand and Pakistan. However, the side also delivered a disappointing performance in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, where they finished seventh on the table with just three wins in nine matches.

Assistant Coach Marcus Trescothick will take charge on an interim basis for the rest of the home summer. England's upcoming white-ball home assignment is against Australia, featuring three T20Is and five ODIs.

Rob Key, ECB’s Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, congratulated Mott on his tenure while also emphasising the need for a new direction for the limited overs outfit.

“On behalf of everyone connected to England cricket and me personally, I would like to thank Mathew for all he has done for the team since his appointment. He can be proud of his achievements as he leaves his post as one of only three coaches who have won a Men’s World Cup with England.

“After three World Cup cycles in a short space of time, I now feel the team needs a new direction to prepare for the challenges ahead. This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for the team's future success. With our focus shifting towards the Champions Trophy early next year and the next cycle of white-ball competition, it is crucial that we ensure the team is focused and prepared.”

Mott, who had held coaching roles with New South Wales, Glamorgan, and Australia Women prior to his appointment with England Men's side, looked back at his time with England with immense pride.

“I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honour. We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022.”

The Men's T20 World Cup win in 2022 was yet another feather in Mott's prolific white-ball coaching career, which has seen him win the Champions League T20 (as New South Wales head coach), Women's T20 World Cup (2018 and 2020 with Australia), and Women's Cricket World Cup (2021 with Australia).
