Mushtaq Ahmed to coach Windies spinners for a month
Mushtaq Ahmed, the former Pakistan leg-spinner, has signed a one-month deal with Cricket West Indies (CWI) to assist the national side as their spin-bowling coach.
His contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board as the head coach of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) ended last month, and a contract extension is expected from July, providing a gap for Ahmed to take up the role with CWI.
“It's a privilege to work with the West Indies cricket team,” Ahmed, 47, was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “They have produced many great cricketers and I have wonderful memories playing against a few times in the 90s.
"They probably are not the same force in the world cricket at this stage but they still have a consistent pipeline of exceptional cricketers coming in the system. It's a short contract but still, a month-long deal is ample enough for me to create a difference.”
Ahmed, who was a part of the Pakistan team that won the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992, took up coaching after retiring from international cricket following 52 Tests and 142 one-day internationals for Pakistan. Overall, he picked up 346 international wickets.
Prior to his role as the head coach at the NCA, Ahmed was assisting Pakistan as their bowling coach between 2016 and 2017. Earlier, after retiring from the game in 2008, he was appointed spin-bowling coach of England, and later went on to take up the role of bowling consultant in Pakistan under Waqar Younis in 2014.
