Pakistan name interim white-ball head coach for men's team

PCB announced the appointment of Aqib Javed as the interim head coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team until the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Javed, a former Pakistan international, takes over the interim coaching duties from Jason Gillespie, who is currently overseeing the side in Australia. Gillespie had taken over the role following the resignation of Gary Kirsten.

Gillespie will continue to be the head coach of the red-ball side, and will rejoin the side for the upcoming Test tour of South Africa.

Javed has plenty of coaching experience, having worked with Lahore Qalandars in the PSL. In the international arena, he has been the bowling coach of Sri Lanka, and has previously been the head coach of the UAE.

During this tenure, Javed will continue to serve as a senior member of the men’s National Selection Committee, and will be assigned additional responsibilities following the conclusion of the eight-team tournament.

Meanwhile, the PCB will initiate the recruitment process for a permanent white-ball head coach, aiming to complete the appointment by the end of the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025.

Pakistan have a number of white-ball engagements in the leadup to the Champions Trophy including three-game ODI and T20I series in Zimbabwe (24 November – 5 December) and South Africa (10-22 December) respectively. They will also participate in a tri-nation ODI series at home, with South Africa and New Zealand, from 8-14 February.
