Poonam Yadav makes the googly her big weapon

Yadav is now India's highest wicket-taker in Twenty20 Internationals with 57 wickets from 39 T20Is. She went past Jhulan Goswami's tally of 56 in the first T20I against Sri Lanka Women at Katunayake on Wednesday, 19 September, where her 4/26 helped India clinch a close encounter.

At 27, and with the experience of 35 one-day internationals as well, Yadav can, at least in T20Is since Goswami's retirement, be considered the torch bearer of India's bowling attack.

Though predominantly a leg-break bowler, it is her her googly that has come out as the major weapon. She has been working on the delivery since the last ICC Women's World Cup in 2017.

"I had been trying to develop the googly for a long time. I used it for the first time in the 2017 World Cup, against Sri Lanka, and with the first one I got (Chamari) Athapaththu out," Yadav told Women's CricZone.

The Sri Lanka captain was a victim of yet another wrong'un on Wednesday.

This was after Athapaththu's 115 had given Sri Lanka a win in the last game of the three-match ODI series that preceded the five T20Is, and when she was threatening to take the T20I away from India by shepherding the chase of 169 with her 22-ball 27.

"The plan was to bowl a googly from outside leg stump and beat her," Yadav said.

She is still working on the delivery, though. "First it (the googly) used to be slow, but now I get it to go because I’ve increased my arm speed. Even the leg spin, with the quick arm rotation, it kicks a bit," she said.

With a spinner, Ramesh Powar, as head coach, the incentive and exposure for spinners like Yadav has increased. Under him, she has been working on how to turn the ball on any surface.

Her ODI economy rate of 3.77 is impressive and so is her T20I bowling average of 13.10. With the ICC Women's World T20 2018 coming up in the Caribbean, Yadav's exploits will be crucial to India's chances.
