Preparation for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup
Anti-Doping
The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup is fast approaching, promising to be bigger and better than ever. With 20 teams competing across two continents, in seven countries and nine venues, preparations are well underway. In the area of anti-doping, we are pleased to announce that Sports Drug Testing International (SDTI) will be the appointed sample collection agency to deliver drug testing across the event and samples will be sent for analysis to the Salt Lake City WADA accredited laboratory. As part of the event anti-doping program, the ICC will also conduct additional analysis on samples where it may be prudent to do so and set aside select samples for long term storage.
As teams are undoubtedly preparing for this event, we encourage Members to ensure their teams receive anti-doping education well in advance of travel, as there will be no education delivered at the event. Members whose teams have not received anti-doping education in recent weeks must make necessary arrangements to ensure their teams are educated and well-informed on all matters anti-doping prior to their travel. Guidance has been shared with participating Members on the content that should be included in their pre-travel anti-doping education.
In addition to education, team medical representatives should prepare to support their teams in the following areas -
- Checking if any player is using medication that requires a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) and supporting the player in submitting a TUE application to the ICC.
- Checking if any player has an existing TUE that needs to be recognized by the ICC and requesting for recognition.
- Carrying medication for common injuries and ailments that do not contain banned substances or require the use of prohibited methods.
- Understanding the ICC TUE application process to enable timely processing of TUEs that may be required during the event.
- Deciding who from the team will accompany players to doping control if selected for testing, especially where translations or guidance may be required.
- Sharing ICC anti-doping resources with teams to allow them to familiarize themselves with their anti-doping responsibilities and understand the doping control process.
- Checking on the use of supplements within the team and providing advice on the best way to manage the risk associated with supplements.
