The 25-year-old was reportedly driving from his residence in Roorkee to New Delhi, when his vehicle hit a road divider at around 5:15am.

Eye-witnesses claim Pant's car caught fire, though he was able to escape, albeit with injuries to his head, back and feet. He has two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee and has also hurt his right wrist, ankle, toe and has suffered abrasion injuries on his back.

Pant was first admitted to Saksham Hospital near Delhi and then shifted to Max Hospital in Dehradun after his condition was stabilised.

MRI scans of his brain and spine are normal and he will undergo plastic surgery for his facial injuries, lacerated wounds and abrasions. Scans of his ankle and knee have been postponed for now because of pain and swelling.

The BCCI is in touch with Pant's family and have extended their support to provide the India wicketkeeper-batter with the best possible medical care.

VVS Laxman, the chief of India's National Cricket Academy (where Pant was due to travel in early January) said on Twitter that the left-hander is "out of danger," though the extent of his injuries is not yet fully known.

Pant was a member of India's Test team for both victories on their recent tour of Bangladesh. He was not part of the white-ball squad that will take on Sri Lanka from 3 January and was due to head to the NCA in Bengaluru for strength and conditioning before the Test series against Australia in February.
