"Unfortunately, the ball hit straight on his knee cap, the same leg on which he has got a surgery done. So he has got a bit of swelling on it. It’s the same knee on which he got the surgery," Rohit said.

"And you know the muscles are quite tender at this point in time, so it's a precautionary measure.

"We don't want to take a risk. Rishabh doesn't want to take a risk because he has gone through a massive surgery on that particular leg. That was the reason for him to go inside. Hopefully, at night he can recover and we will see him back on the field tomorrow."

In the Test, India were bowled out for 46, their lowest total in a home Test, in the first innings after an impressive bowling display by the visitors.

In response, New Zealand were 180/3 at stumps, leading by 134 runs.

“I am hurting to see this score of 46 as a captain as it was my call to bat first. But one or two bad calls in a year is quite alright,” Rohit said.

“We thought the pitch would be flatter. It was a misjudgment on my part."
