Shock win sparks mass media coverage in US and around the globe

It was one of the biggest shocks in the history of cricket, and the USA men’s cricket team’s stunning Super Over win over Pakistan at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup this week has drawn huge media coverage across the United States - and the world.

The USA are co-hosting the ongoing tournament with West Indies, but the team have never played at the T20 World Cup before and were given little to no chance of beating Pakistan – finalists in the most recent competition and semi-finalists in six of the eight men’s T20 World Cups.

But USA managed to outlast their more-fancied opponents in a memorable Super Over.

USA now have a genuine chance of qualifying for the Super 8 stage of the tournament, with two Group A fixtures remaining.

And they will be eyeing another mammoth upset when they take on the world’s No. 1 side in the format, India, on Wednesday 12 June in New York. Tickets and hospitality for that huge occasion at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium can be purchased here.

The remarkable victory over Pakistan is by far the highest-profile of USA’s four ever wins against cricket’s full member nations, and drew attention across America.

The iconic SportsCenter led with the news, covering USA’s stunning win in Dallas as one of their major stories.

And a string of major outlets in the country celebrated the famous win, including ESPN and Bleacher Report.

ICC commentator Andrew Leonard went on the CNN World Sport show in the aftermath of USA’s famous win to discuss the significance of the result and what it means going forward for both teams and the tournament as a whole.

And USA’s huge result earned praise across the cricketing world and beyond, with the US Men’s National Soccer Team posting their congratulations on social media

The magnitude of the result even drew a reaction from United States senator Chuck Shumer, who has represented New York in the senate since 1999 and is the current Majority Leader in the American political upper chamber.

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, there were mixed reactions among those who had watched on at the US Consulate in Pakistan’s capital city Lahore.

The story of Super Over sensation Saurabh Netravalkar, who has taken time out from his day job to perform at the World Cup, also captured the imagination, including at business publication Front Office Sports.

Saurabh might be needing a bit of extra time off work in the next few weeks at this rate.

Online sports reporter and pundit for the tournament Jimmy O’Brien was also blown away by USA's achievement, and took to Instagram with his reaction to the win.

Elsewhere in the world there was also plenty of reaction to USA’s famous win, with BBC radio presenter and cricket podcast host Greg James having plenty to say about the outcome of the game.

And NHL side New York Islanders also celebrated the result with pictures of New Yorker Ali Khan taken on the ice with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup trophy.

USA beat Canada in their opening game before Thursday’s triumph against Pakistan, meaning that they top Group A at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with two matches in the opening group phase still to play.

The world’s top-ranked men’s T20I team, India, are up next for the co-hosts in New York on Wednesday 12 June.

And USA will close out their Group A fixtures against Ireland in Lauderhill on Friday 14 June, where they will hope to seal a spot in the Super 8 phase of the tournament against all the odds.
