ONE HEROIC INNINGS

Handed cap number 85 as one of India’s five debutants in their Test match against England, Sneh Rana wasted no time entering Indian cricket folklore, blunting the hosts' attack to rescue a draw in Bristol.

A bowling all-rounder, Rana's 80* from 154 balls saved the day for India in the second innings, repelling England's bowlers right as they seemed to have her and the tail cornered.

Combining in an unbeaten partnership of 104 with Taniya Bhatia, Rana hit over 50 of her runs in boundaries and finished with the highest Women's Test score by a player batting at number eight since Chamani Seneviratna’s 105* for Sri Lanka in 1998.

Rana’s efforts put her in the Player of the Match conversation, though she was beaten out by compatriot Shafali Verma.

MISERLY WITH BALL IN HAND

While her batting received all the deserved appreciation, Rana's off-spin was vital in India's game plan with the ball, chipping away at England's batting line-up

Bowling almost a third of India's overs, Rana took 4/131 from her 39.2 overs. She was the team's workhorse, simultaneously tying up an end while taking wickets.

Rana claimed opener Tammy Beaumont for 66, as well as Amy Jones (1), Georgia Elwiss (5) and Anya Shrubsole (47).

‘WHAT WE NEED RIGHT NOW’

Hailed as the “find of the England series” by her coach Ramesh Powar, Rana has appeared unperturbed on the tour, also playing a part in the ODI series. Going at a tick over four an over with the ball, Rana’s batting exploits in the backend have given India another dimension at the death.

Claiming 1/43 in the second match, Rana’s cool temperament was once again on display in the third ODI in early July (outside the voting period) as she struck a 22-ball 24 to push her team to victory.

"I am really happy for her,” Powar added.

“She is someone who can play in crunch situations, and that is what we need right now. When the big tournaments and the big series come up, we need players of calibre, who can take pressure."
