State of Play in Group 2: England qualify and India one win away from semi-finals
England are unbeaten after three straight wins, including a clutch victory over India, and they are now guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals.
Who will join them in the knockout stage is yet to be determined, however, with only Ireland completely out of qualification contention.
Three wins from three and a huge net run rate put England on the brink of qualification after their third victory. And a place in the semi-finals was secured by results elsewhere.
West Indies beating Pakistan on Sunday means that England cannot slip out of the top two and are certain of a place in the semi-finals.
Victory over Pakistan in their final game will ensure England finish top of the group and avoid a semi-final meeting with Australia.
The loss to England left India sweating on their qualification chances.
But Pakistan missed the opportunity to put big pressure on, with their loss to West Indies meaning that India’s fate is back in their own hands.
Win Monday’s match against Ireland and Harmanpreet Kaur and her team can secure qualification.
Should India lose that match then they would only miss out on a semi-final spot should either the margin of defeat be so significant that they slip below West Indies on Net Run Rate, or should Pakistan pull off a an upset win over England.
Three defeats from three games mean that Ireland are the first team in the group to be ruled out of qualification contention.
They have played really well in patches however, particularly in the nail-biting final-over loss to West Indies, and will depart the tournament wondering what might have been.
Many of the team’s best players are extremely young, so they will have future opportunities to excel on the world stage.
