Stuart Broad becomes fourth fast bowler to 500 Test wickets

Broad

Broad, who made his Test debut in 2007, now has 500 Test wickets. He achieved the milestone amid an outstanding performance in his 140th Test match. He is the second England bowler to reach the mark, after his long-time team-mate James Anderson.

The only other fast bowlers to have achieved the feat are West Indies' Courtney Walsh and Australia's Glenn McGrath. The all-time list is headed by spinners with Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble at the top of the charts.

Momentous as the achievement is in itself, it has been made more memorable for Broad on account of his fabulous showing in the ongoing game. He destroyed West Indies with figures of 6/31 in their first innings, exploiting his mastery of seam movement to leave the opposition batsmen clueless. He then produced two early wickets in West Indies' second innings in the dying stages of the third day to set the tone for what could become a series-clinching victory.

After a washed out fourth day, England would've hoped for an early breakthrough and Broad delivered just that by getting the ball to sharply seam back in to beat Brathwaite's inside edge and have him trapped plumb in front.

At the time of publishing, West Indies were three wickets down, still over 350 runs from the target with more than 85 overs left in the game, weather permitting.

Broad has picked up 18 five-wicket hauls in his illustrious career as well as two 10-wicket match hauls. Broad has also been a useful lower-order batsman and has well over 3,000 Test runs to his name, including a century and 13 fifties – the most recent of which came in England's first innings this Test.
