T20 World Cup tilt on track as England finish home summer in style

An unbeaten home summer against New Zealand has England well placed for success at this year's T20 World Cup, according to coach Jon Lewis and skipper Heather Knight.

As far as dress rehearsals go for this year's ICC Women's T20 World Cup, England just produced a near faultless display and Jon Lewis' side look set to enter this year's tournament as a strong contender.

England defeated New Zealand in the fifth and final T20I series at Lord's on Tuesday to complete a 5-0 series sweep over the Kiwis and in the process ensured they finished their home summer unbeaten and in fine form ahead of October’s T20 World Cup.

Lewis' side got plenty of runs from their top-order as the likes of Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey and Danni Wyatt scored freely, their fast bowlers Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer continue to impress and their strong spin bowling contingent consisting of Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn and Charlie Dean once again proved their prowess.

It all bodes well for England as they attempt to claim a second Women's T20 World Cup title in Bangladesh later this year and Lewis believes his side will enter that tournament full of confidence.

“I feel like we’ve got pretty much all bases covered at the moment,” Lewis said.

“We’ve played some fantastic cricket over this series, and we’re confident that we can win the (T20) World Cup.”

Standing in England's way at the T20 World Cup are six-time champions Australia, who have won the last three editions of the tournament and continue to go from strength to strength despite the shock retirement of skipper Meg Lanning last year.

The performances of skipper Heather Knight are going to crucial to England's hopes of beating Australia and winning the T20 World Cup and the experienced captain found some form in the final T20I clash against the White Ferns when hitting a quickfire 46* to claim Player of the Match honours.

It was some welcome time in the middle for Knight, who has been starved of opportunities with the bat for much of the summer as England's stylish top-order continued to amass runs with ease.

“I haven’t had much time in the middle because the girls at the top have done so well," Knight noted.

"I’m disappointed I haven’t contributed too much in this series when I have got a chance.

“So, it was really nice to get a contribution today and I feel my game is in a really good place."

England's stars will now turn their attention to domestic duties at home in The Hundred, while the team have a white-ball series in Ireland in September to further hone their skills ahead of the T20 World Cup.

And Knight believes her side is well placed for a tilt at T20 World Cup success and thinks selectors will have a tough time narrowing their squad down to just 15 players for the 20-over showcase.

“We started talking about it a couple of days ago, that we really wanted to finish this summer unbeaten,” Knight told the BBC.

“We’ve been so ruthless throughout the series. It’s been something to work on for us over the last six to 12 months, to really nail teams when we’re on top and we’ve done that brilliantly this series.

“All-round performances, with lots of different contributions so I’m a very happy captain.

“Picking that World Cup squad is going to be really hard and nailing it down to an XI will be a tough thing to do, but that’s a really good place to be in.”
