The Graduates – Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli captained India to the title in the 2008 tournament in Malaysia, hitting an even 100 in the group stages against a West Indies team featuring Kieran Powell, Adrian Barath and Darren Bravo. The innings – which came from 74 balls – featured 10 fours and four sixes.

He also scored 43 and took two wickets in the final against a New Zealand side captained by Kane Williamson and featuring Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Corey Anderson, as India won by three wickets in Kuala Kumpur. Ravindran Jadeja also featured in Kohli's team.

Kohli has fond memories of the tournament and credits the event for accelerating his overall development. He told ICC: “The ICC U19 World Cup was a very important milestone in my career. It helped us get a good platform to build on and make our careers from thereon, so it holds a very important place in my mind and heart.

“It’s very important to understand and respect the opportunity it provides you and as I said, for me, it holds a very special place in my heart.”

One of many ICC U19 CWC graduates to go on to captain their country, Kohli has since led India to the top of the world Test rankings.
