Warner climbs the batting rankings

58197

Australia opener David Warner has moved up three places in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmenafter stellar performances against England in the Perth Test, which the home side won by 150 runs on Tuesday to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-Test series.

Warner, who scored 60 and 112 to be the leading run-getter to date in the series, earned 51 ratings points to end at 741 ratings points, which has given him a lift of three places to put him just outside the top 10 in 11th position.

The left-handed batsman now has Misbah-ul-Haq, Graeme Smith and Younus Khan firmly in his sights as he trails the eighth-ranked Pakistan captain by 42 ratings points, the ninth-ranked South Africa captain by 30 ratings points and the 10th-ranked former Pakistan captain by 28 ratings points.

The other centurions from the Perth Test - Shane Watson and Steven Smith of Australia, and Ben Stokes of England – have also moved up the rankings.

Watson’s second innings contribution of 103 has given him a jump of six places and has put him in 32nd position, Smith’s first innings score of 111 has helped him gain eight places to 37th spot, and Stokes’ maiden century has seen him rocket 81 places to 73rd position.

Other batsmen to move up the order following the Perth Test include Kevin Pietersen in 15th (up by one place) and Michael Carberry in 83rd (up by 17 places).

South Africa’s duo of AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla continue to head the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen and will defend their rankings in the Johannesburg Test against India, which started on Wednesday. Australia captain Michael Clarke trails Amla by 30 ratings points and is 41 points behind de Villiers, and will have an opportunity to either regain the number-one spot or close the gap with the top two ranked batsmen when the fourth Test gets underway in Melbourne on 26 December.

In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, Australia’s Mitchell Johnson has gained three places and has now joined England spinner Graeme Swann in 14th position. Johnson recorded match figures of six for 140.

The Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers is headed by Dale Steyn of South Africa, with team-mate Vernon Philander in second position.

The latest rankings, which were released on Thursday, also take into account the Wellington Test in which New Zealand defeated the West Indies by an innings and 73 runs.

The New Zealand players to make an upward movement include Ross Taylor moving up a place to a best-ever sixth in batting list and fast bowler Trent Boult rising 11 places to a career-best 10th position in bowlers’ table.
