'We need to show more intent' – Roston Chase
The Windies were kept to 195/9 in their 50 overs, which Bangladesh chased down in 35.1 overs to win by five wickets in the first ODI of the series on Sunday, 9 December.
Chase, who made 32 and picked up two wickets, admitted that they simply didn’t make enough runs. “We spoke before the match and said the par score was around 230-240. We fell short of that and paid the price,” he said.

“It is a case us needing to adjust to the pitch a little bit faster. We need to show a little more intent in those middle overs, try to push the score along in those crucial areas of the game – at the start and in the middle overs.”
Ruing the batsmen’s inability to “read the situation”, he added, "We got stuck in the middle and didn't rotate. I don't think that [171 dot balls] is acceptable in international cricket. We also lacked boundary options in the middle.
“Once the field was spread, the Bangladeshi guys really squeezed us and we didn't get as much runs as we should."

Only 35.1 overs are needed to overhaul West Indies' 195/9, Mushfiqur Rahim (55*) and Liton Das (41) leading the chase. The Tigers win by 5 wickets.#BANvWI scorecard ➡️ https://t.co/QK9OMy1p25 pic.twitter.com/1aGUatA2eT
Mortaza, meanwhile, defended the team’s decision to pick four openers in their XI. With all of Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Imrul Kayes and Soumya Sarkar playing, Kayes came in at No.3, while Sarkar was slotted in at No.6. Mohammad Mithun missed out.
“Soumya can bat in many positions. He can be an opener or bat at No.3, or even can bat at No.6 or 7 as he has the ability to play big shots,” said Mortaza. “Mithun can also play shots but Soumya can bowl a few overs at the middle if the spinners fail due to dew factor. That’s why we have chosen him.
“Mithun was a bit unlucky as he was in good form. But we did it for team combination.”
Mortaza himself picked up three wickets, despite not being in peak form, he said. “I am carrying the injury that I sustained from the Zimbabwe series. So it is not that I am at my best because I have grabbed three wickets.
“Along the way I have added a hamstring injury that I don't have normally. So I am not physically far better than what I was during the Zimbabwe series," he said.
