He hit 60 in 37 balls in the semi-final against New Zealand, and then 42 in 35 in the final against England as Imran Khan’s Pakistan lifted the trophy for the first, and so far only, time.

A total of 8830 runs in Tests at an average of 49.60, and 11,739 runs in ODIs at 39.52 – and 35 international centuries overall – makes him one of Pakistan’s finest batsmen, a treat to watch when at his best.

After retiring from the game in 2007, Inzamam went away from cricket for a while, before first taking up a coaching position with Afghanistan and then becoming Pakistan’s Chief Selector.

“For any cricketer, it’s difficult to stay away from the game after retirement. Though I wasn’t involved for a few years, I was focussed on my own work, but I always wanted to return to cricket in some capacity. The love and passion is all for cricket,” he says.
