Woakes says game is wide open after compelling day of Test cricket

Australia, who are leading the Ashes series 1-0, responded to England's first-innings score of 258 with 250, which was studded with a Steve Smith 92, and later reduced the hosts to 96/4. The home team ended the day with a lead of 104 to set up an exciting day five.

"Of course, we can win the game – all three results are still possible," said Woakes after the end of play on Saturday, 17 August. "I still think it is an evenly-matched game. We are pleased we will not be batting last on that pitch, but we still need to build that lead and make sure we feel safe to try and bowl them out."

England lost opener Jason Roy and skipper Joe Root to Pat Cummins on consecutive balls, while Joe Denly and Rory Burns fell to Peter Siddle after sharing a crucial 55-run third-wicket stand.

The hosts finished the day with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler unbeaten, and Woakes believed that the two batsmen are capable of accelerating at the right time and put the game beyond Australia.

"We have got 98 overs, so more time than you think, and it’s hard to put a number on it, but we have got to bat sensibly. We have two guys who can accelerate quickly so, as always, the morning session will be crucial.

"Hopefully, we can bat well in the morning, and with Jonny [Bairstow] and myself to come, we bat deep. Hopefully, at some point, we can have a go at the Australians."
