Rohit Sharma's appointment as Test captain was confirmed during the press conference to announce the Test and T20I squad for the home series against Sri Lanka. Having already been named the ODI and T20I captain, Rohit takes over the reins of Test captaincy from Virat Kohli, who decided to step down after the 2-1 series loss against South Africa.

Rohit made his Test debut for India in 2013 but it wasn't until 2019 that he became a permanent fixture in the red-ball format. The 34-year-old's Test career has witnessed a turnaround in the last few years ever since he was moved to open the batting. Since then, he has scored 1462 runs at an average of 58.48 and more recently, earned a spot in the ICC Test Team of the Year in 2021.

In terms of captaincy, Rohit has enjoyed a great start to life as the full-time ODI and T20I skipper, recording series wins over New Zealand and West Indies. He will be looking to carry the momentum forward into Tests as well, starting with the series against Sri Lanka.

With Rohit now the captain across all formats, he received best wishes from all around the world after being named the new Test skipper.

The series against Sri Lanka will be played under ICC World Test Championship 2021-23, where India currently find themselves in fifth spot with a win percentage of 49.07. Under new leadership, India will be looking to scale up to the top two spots and make it to the final of the World Test Championship for the second time in a row.
