Result: India won by 44 runs
Perhaps no previous meeting will be as instructive as this one, given its recency. Only seven days will separate the teams’ Group A decider and the upcoming tournament Final.
India got the better of the Black Caps in Dubai, staying unbeaten and topping their group.
The Kiwis’ bowlers undoubtedly played their part, led by Matt Henry’s five wickets, but India’s bullpen was equally impressive in the second innings, tearing right through New Zealand’s line-up to complete a 44-run win.

2023 Cricket World Cup Semi-Final, Mumbai
Result: India won by 70 runs
India qualified for the decider of their home ICC Men's Cricket World Cup by beating the Black Caps at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
Batting first, India’s top order came up clutch. Rohit Sharma (47 off 29) excelled in the early exchanges alongside Shubman Gill (80* off 66), who retired hurt on 79 runs before returning to the crease at the death.
Then Virat Kohli (117 off 113) and Shreyas Iyer (105 off 70) went full beast mode, propelling the hosts to a mammoth first innings total of 397/4.
After falling for 39/2 in the eighth over, Daryl Mitchell (134 off 119) and Kane Williamson (69 off 73) led the Kiwis’ valiant chasing efforts, but wickets tumbled in the last 10 overs, with quick Mohammed Shami cleaning up, taking 7/57.

2023 Cricket World Cup Group stage, Dharamshala
Result: India won by four wickets
The hosts completed a successful run chase at Dharamshala’s HPCA Stadium against the Kiwis to collect another telling group stage win in their home World Cup. Just like in the semi-final, Mohammed Shami and Daryl Mitchell were standouts for their respective sides.
New Zealand set the score, making 273, led by Mitchell’s 130 off 127 deliveries. He didn’t get much assistance outside of Rachin Ravindra’s 75 runs, though, as Shami picked up an impressive 5/54.
India sealed their successful chase with four wickets and two overs up their sleeve, headlined by Virat Kohli’s 95 off 104 balls.

2019 Cricket World Cup Semi-Final, Manchester
Result: New Zealand won by 18 runs
This was the last time New Zealand’s beat India in a men's ICC major, claiming their Old Trafford showdown by 18 runs.
The Black Caps batted first, scratching and clawing their way to 239/8. It was Ross Taylor (74 off 90) and Kane Williamson (67 off 95) that led the way, putting on a 65-run stand for the third wicket.
The Kiwis then tore through India’s top order, which sunk to 4/24 in the 10th over. They fought back courageously, led by Ravindra Jadeja (77 off 59) and MS Dhoni (50 off 72), but couldn’t complete their second innings comeback, losing their 10th wicket in the final over 18 runs short of pulling off the miraculous.
