Revisiting the best of Steve Smith in ODIs
The Australian talisman will be remembered as one of the all-time great ODI batters.
Australia's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 exit saw batting icon Steve Smith call it quits on a glittering ODI career. With 5800 runs from 170 outings, Smith forged a lasting legacy that included two Men's Cricket World Cup wins.
As he bids adieu from the format, we revisit some of his finest performances:

164 vs New Zealand (Sydney, 2016)
His highest-ever score in One-Day International cricket came against New Zealand, hitting 164 from 157 balls, with an amazing 14 fours and four sixes in there. Not only that, but the way he picked up his run-rate was incredible: it took him just 28 balls to move from his century to 150.
Smith was named player of the match in recognition not only of his run-scoring but two good catches, one to remove his opposite number Kane Williamson, and one to dismiss BJ Watling, diving to his left to take it one-handed, which he later said was his favourite of his career.

105 vs India (Sydney, 2015)
This was a thumping win for Australia in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, and Smith headlined the triumph a brilliant innings of 105 off 93 balls to propel his side to 328/7.
After David Warner fell in the fourth over, Smith and Aaron Finch piled on the runs for the second wicket to help their team to a 95-run win.
Smith had top-scored in the quarter-final against Pakistan, with his 65 helping them to 216/4 and a six-wicket win. It was fitting that in the final against New Zealand, it was Smith who eventually went on to score the winning run as Australia lifted the trophy in Melbourne.

108 vs South Africa (Durban, 2016)
Scoring a century overseas and still not getting the player of the match award seems hard on Smith, who scored 108 off 107 balls, including nine fours and a six. However, his batting partner for much of the match was opener David Warner, who made 117 off 107 deliveries and picked up the plaudits. Between them, the pair helped Australia to 371, which South Africa managed to chase down with four balls remaining, thanks mostly to David Miller's unbeaten 118.
105 vs New Zealand (Cairns, 2022)
In the third one-day international against near neighbours New Zealand, Smith finished the series in style, with a solid century to take Australia to 267/5, and then three catches in the field to wrap up a 25-run win and a series whitewash. It turned out to be his last hundred in the format.
For his 167 runs over the three matches, Smith was player of the series.
102* vs England (Hobart, 2015)
In the fourth match of this tri-series featuring India and England, Smith was the player of the match, scoring 102 not out from 95 balls. He helped his side to 304/7, beating old rivals England by three wickets with a single ball remaining - despite the heroics of Ian Bell's 141 in the first innings, which got Eoin Morgan's men to a challenging total of 303/8.
Last dance: 73 vs India (Dubai, 2025)
It was a memorable innings to bow out on as the captain pushed himself and his team as far as he could against a brilliant India side in a battle to reach the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He had chosen to bat first but knew that his bowling options were relatively limited (indeed, he had been asked before the match whether he would have to bowl himself, which he treated as a joke, but may well have been a possibility).
And he certainly would not have expected to be at the crease at the end of the third over with his side on 4/1. Nevertheless, he led by example, putting together an innings of 73 (including four fours and a six) over the next 34 overs. It was not quite a big enough target to put Australia out of India's reach, but it was a competitive total that made for a terrific spectacle.
