372 days until CWC19: Windies' record breakers
Today marks 372 days until the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales – a number which seems of little significance until you delve into the Cricket World Cup record books.
On 24 February 2015, Windies pair Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels put on an astonishing 372 runs against Zimbabwe, eclipsing India's Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid’s record of 318 for the highest-ever partnership at the Cricket World Cup.
Gayle and Samuels’ partnership contributed to every single one of the Windies’ runs (minus extras) in Canberra that day, after Gayle’s opening partner Dwayne Smith departed for a duck in the first over!
Unsurprisingly, Gayle was the star of the show, bludgeoning 10 fours and a record 16 sixes on his way to 215 from just 147 balls.
Samuels was happy to play second fiddle but took no prisoners himself, hitting 11 fours and three sixes as he finished with an unbeaten 133.
To mark the milestone, play the video below to relive some of the pair’s sensational hitting as they wrote themselves into the Cricket World Cup record books.
