Bumrah brushes aside injury concerns to shoulder India attack
The India quick has brushed aside injury concerns and any extra pressure that might come with playing a Cricket World Cup on home soil to make a fast start at the showpiece event.
Bumrah has claimed the equal most wickets at the tournament so far with eight in three matches after overcoming a back injury that sidelined him for almost a year.
The 29-year-old added to his tally with two scalps in a Player of the Match performance against Pakistan, as Bumrah and India rose to the occasion in the high-stakes blockbuster.
"I don't really look at it as pressure or responsibility because as a child I wanted to be a cricketer,” Bumrah told ICC Digital Insider Tanvi Shah after India’s triumph over Pakistan.
"I wanted to play for India. I wanted to do the difficult job. I wanted to make my team win. So that is what I'm doing.”
Bumrah bowled a controlled spell with the new ball to restrict Pakistan’s start to their Cricket World Cup clash, then returned to help skittle their rivals’ middle order.
The right-armer finished with 2/19 and the key wickets of Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan to help set up a commanding seven-wicket victory in the much-anticipated clash.
While Bumrah might have taken bigger hauls in the 81 ODIs he has played since a debut in the format in January 2016, he hopes to draw on all of his experience of playing in India to propel the tournament hosts toward a first Cricket World Cup trophy since 2011.
"I've learned a lot over the years. I tried to use my experience, I've played a lot in this country,” Bumrah said.
"So you use my experience and try to help the team as much as you can because if you think about pressure and expectation and responsibility, you won't be able to perform with that baggage of expectation.”
