Cricket World Cup memories: Windies v Bangladesh
The head-to-head record is in the Windies’ favour, with three wins in their four meetings at the ICC Cricket World Cup, the other match was abandoned because of rain.
We take a closer look at those previous World Cup encounters.
21 May 1999 (Dublin)
Windies won by 7 wickets
The Windies and Bangladesh met for the first time at the Cricket World Cup in the 1999 edition of the tournament, when the two sides faced off in Dublin.
Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first and Mehrab Hossain was the top scorer as he recorded a respectable 64. However, the Windies bowling attack was in fine form that day as they bowled Bangladesh out for 182.
Courtney Walsh was the star with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 4/25, earning him the Player of the Match award. He was supported by Reon King, who ended with figures of 3/30.
The Windies took their time and ended up reaching the target after 46.3 overs, as they relied on the patient batting of Ridley Jacobs and Jimmy Adams, with both batsmen posting half-centuries as the Windies won the group stage clash by seven wickets.
18 February 2003 (Benoni)
Match abandoned
Rain caused the match to be abandoned when these two met in 2003, though there was still a lot of cricket played in Benoni, South Africa.
The Windies were first to bat scored 244/9, with Ricardo Powell chipping in with a half-century and captain Carl Hooper hitting 45.
Bangladesh were on 32/2 after 8.1 overs before the decision was made to abandon the match.
19 April 2007 (Bridgetown)
Windies won by 99 runs
The two sides met at the Super Eights stage four years later, and the Windies again emerged victorious.
Playing on home soil, the Windies finished on 230/5 thanks to an excellent batting display from Ramnaresh Sarwan, who scored 91*. Shivnarine Chanderpaul also did his bit, patiently scoring 50 runs.
In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 131 as Daren Powell led the charge for the Windies’ bowling attack, recording figures of 3/38. Corey Collymore kept things tight, finishing with 2/11 and an economical rate of 1.57 from his seven overs.
4 March 2011 (Dhaka)
Windies won by 9 wickets
The most recent Cricket World Cup clash between these two sides took place in 2011 and the Windies were the victors - in very convincing fashion!
In Dhaka, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first, but their opener Tamim Iqbal wasn’t out very long as he was soon walking back to the pavilion after being dismissed for a duck. The collapse continued throughout the order as after just 18.5 overs Bangladesh were bowled out for 58. Sulieman Benn starred with the ball, as he took 4/18, with Kemar Roach and Darren Sammy claiming three wickets apiece.
When it was the Windies’ turn, Chris Gayle got them to their target early on as he scored 37* off 36 balls as they finished on 59/1 after just 12.2 overs.
