Five best ODI spells of Imran Tahir

Imran Tahir

Imran Tahir began his ODI career at the World Cup stage in 2011, and has decided to call it quits after the 2019 edition of the tournament. The 40-year old, who lit up the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 with his trademark celebratory run, dismissing Johnny Bairstow for a first-ball duck in the very first over of the tournament, has been a proven match-winner for South Africa, with 164 wickets from 99 games. As he takes the field in his 100th ODI match on Sunday, we revisit his top five game changing spells in the format.

1. 7/45 v West Indies at Basseterre, 2016

Imran Tahir returned his career-best ODI figures of 7/45 in a tri-series game against West Indies

The best of Tahir came in a tri-series game against West Indies, which involved Australia as the third side. Asked to bat first by Windies skipper Jason Holder, South Africa posted 343/4 thanks to Hashim Amla's 110 and fifties from Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock.

While defending, Tahir switched on the beast mode and started picking up wickets after wickets. He first dismissed Windies opener Andre Fletcher, and later returned to spark a middle-order collapse with the dismissal of Marlon Samuels. From 169/5, Windies slipped to 208 all out as Tahir went on to run havoc by claiming all the remaining five wickets to power his side to a dominant 139-run victory. He was deservingly adjudged Player of the Match.

Not only this spell is Tahir's career-best performance, these are also the best ODI figures ever recorded by a South African bowler.

2. 2/14 v New Zealand at Eden Park, 2017

He may not have taken a lot of wickets in this game, but his spell of 2/14 from 10 overs was the most economical one ever bowled by Tahir in the 50-over format. When South Africa toured to New Zealand in 2017, the five-match ODI series was tied at 2-2. It was during the final game when all of South Africa's bowlers bowled tremendously, including Tahir, who ended up being the most economical of the lot.

The spinner claimed two late wickets of Tim Southee and Jeetan Patel, and the visitors soon shot New Zealand out for a paltry 149, which they chased down in 32.2 overs. South Africa took the ODI series home and also again claimed the No.1 rank in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's****ODI Team Rankings back from Australia.

3. 4/41 v West Indies at Feroz Shah Kotla, 2011

Imran Tahir made his ODI debut at the 2011 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup

Not just an international debut, Tahir is among one of the bowlers to make his first international appearance at the World Cup stage, and also became the first South African African to do so. It took the spinner just one ODI game to announce his arrival in the international circuit. He was pretty successful, returning 4/41 from 10 overs.

He first dismissed the opener Devon Smith and then sparked a middle-order collapse by claiming the wickets of Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and Devon Thomas. Tahir was the pick of the bowlers as South Africa bowled West Indies out for 222, which the former chased down with ease, courtesy of AB de Villiers brilliant knock of 107* and useful forties from skipper Graeme Smith and JP Duminy.

4. 5/45 v West Indies at Sydney Cricket Ground, 2015

A first five-wicket haul in ODIs and what better stage to claim it than a World Cup? Tahir seems to have enjoyed bowling in ODI cricket especially at the World Cup stage against West Indies. After his memorable debut, in his second outing of the 2015 edition of the tournament, Tahir once again took the center stage. After AB de Villiers' brilliant 162* powered South Africa to a big total of 408/5, a Tahir-led attack folded West Indies for 151 to set up a comprehensive 257-run win.

Tahir's plot against West Indies once again resembled his debut spell. He sent back one of the openers, Dwayne Smith, and later sparked a middle-order collapse, the only difference being – this time he claimed a five-for.

5. 6/24 v Zimbabwe at Mangaung Oval, 2018

Imran Tahir became only the fourth South African to take three hat-tricks in ODIs

In this game, Zimbabwe managed to bowl South Africa out for 198, Tahir, in reply helped his team bowl the opposition out for just 78 to set up a dominant 120-run victory, their 28th successive ODI win against Zimbabwe – the longest such streak in 50-over format.

It was the spinner's last five-for in ODI cricket. Dale Steyn shone with the bat, top-scoring with a career-best 85-ball 60, before South Africa were bundled out under 200.

While defending the total, Steyn and Lungi Ngidi picked up the top three wickets, Andile Phehlukwayo chipped in with one while Tahir took care of the rest of the line-up. Not only did he pick six wickets, he also claimed a hat-trick. He first dismissed Sean Williams on the final ball of the 18th over, and in his next over, he then picked up the wickets of Peter Moor and Brandon Mavuta off the first two deliveries, becoming only the fourth South African bowler to register an ODI hat-trick.
