How India’s attack unpicked Pakistan in devastating collapse

Bumrah was one of five Indian bowlers to finish with two wickets to his name, and played a key role in a first innings that saw eight wickets fall for just 36 runs.

For Pakistan, being 155/2 approaching 30 overs is not perfect, but it’s not far off the plan for a team that typically looks to build a platform through their top four before looking to go big in the last 10-15 overs.

And it wasn’t even as if the collapse of 8/36 came in that period of late acceleration.

Here’s how India’s bowlers turned the game on its head:

After going for a few runs, Mohammed Siraj struck back to bowl Pakistan captain Babar Azam for 50 in ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

A peach from Siraj, perhaps keeping just a touch low as it angled in and cleaned up Pakistan’s captain. It’s a brilliant delivery and one that kicked off the start of something dramatic.

Trapped in-front and pretty much plumb, Rohit Sharma reviewed and the on-field decision was correctly overturned.

A second wicket in the over from the excellent Yadav, this one was a peach of a googly, given some air and bowling Iftikhar around his legs.

This was surely the ball of the match and probably the best wicket-taking delivery of the tournament so far. Pakistan’s key remaining batter walked off after being undone by a peach of a slower bowl, with Bumrah’s off-cutter fizzing between bat and pad.

Classic Bumrah – fast, straight and deadly. Pakistan’s hopes of a competitive total were all but extinguished with this dismissal.

Bumrah was back at it again, holding on to a dipping catch as Nawaz shanked a shot straight to mid-on.

Pakistan’s late attempts to hit out of trouble did not go well, and Jadeja benefited as Shubman Gill took a steepling catch.

A delivery that was too good for Haris Rauf brought Pakistan’s innings to a premature close. This was their worst-ever collapse at a Cricket World Cup and the third worst in their ODI history.
