Men's Cricket World Cup 1987 – Overview

1987 Cricket World CUp

**Dates:**8 October to 8 November 1987

**Locations:**India, Pakistan

**Number of teams:**8

**Overs per innings:**50

**Number of matches:**27

**Format:**Teams were split into two groups of four, with each team playing the other teams in their group twice. The top two teams from each group then proceeded to the semi-finals, followed by the final.

**Semi-finals:**Pakistan took on Australia in Lahore in the first semi-final, and were led on the batting front by David Boon's knock for 65. Despite three wickets for Imran Khan, Mike Veletta's 48 and an unbeaten 32 from Steve Waugh took Australia to 267/8 after 50 overs. In reply, Pakistan were led by a 112-run partnership between Imran and Javed Miandad, but eventually fell 19 runs short of victory, as Craig McDermott took 5/44 – his best ODI figures – to put Australia in their second ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final.

The second semi-final saw England play India. A hundred from Graham Gooch, alongside Mike Gatting's 62-ball 56 took the English to a total of 254/6. India's run chase was guided by Mohammad Azharuddin's 64, but his dismissal – at the hands of off-spinner Eddie Hemmings – triggered an Indian collapse at the Wankhede Stadium. India's last five wickets fell for 15 runs, as Hemmings finished with four wickets to take England to a 35-run victory.

**Final:**Australia batted first in the final against their fiercest rivals, with Boon repeating his semi-final heroics with an innings of 75. England were set a target of 254 and appeared to be on course for victory with Bill Athey and Gatting's growing third-wicket partnership. An ill-timed reverse-sweep from Gatting saw him fall to Allan Border, and while England fought hard, they were eventually defeated by seven runs to hand Australia their first ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title.
