Own your space: Brevis’ lessons for U19 World Cup hopefuls

Speaking ahead of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024, beginning on 19 January in South Africa, Proteas phenom Dewald Brevis reminisced on what was a breakout tournament for him in 2022.

Brevis was a standout performer at the most recent edition of the Under 19 showcase, amassing 506 runs while averaging 84.33 and striking 90.19, with the next-best player (Haseebullah Khan of Pakistan) putting up 380 runs during the tournament.

The South African's 18 sixes were eight more than the next best on the list, and his efforts led not only to senior Proteas selection, but a taste of T20 domestic cricket around the world.

"I get good flashbacks when I think back, there's so much good memories you build with the team, with your players, and with other countries’ players," Brevis began, reflecting on his time in the West Indies.

"It's absolutely like a springboard because you're on (the) world stage and there's so much opportunity that you can just grab, and then remember, everyone is watching and it can boost your career very quickly.”

The young batter feels what is at stake even at an Under-19 global tournament can bring the best out of those who thrive in tense situations.

“I feel there was always pressure situations and I thrive on pressure. I like pressure. The team was quite a few times in pressure environments and pressure situations, and I really enjoyed that,” Brevis added.

“It is against the best of the best of the countries, their best U19s, so you learn to play against those guys and what to do in certain situations.

“You just go out there and play against the best.”

It's one thing to thrive at the underage level, yet another to belong at the senior level, making the leap against experienced world-class players.

To handle the jump, Brevis believes the most important thing for a player is to know why they've been trusted in their team selection

“I think to be honest it always stays the same because a cricket game is a cricket game,” Brevis said while focusing more on the constants of the game irrespective of the level.

“You have to own your space. You have to know you are here for a reason. And I know that, and I'm ready to take on anything.

“When you go up high and play at higher levels, for example, the senior Proteas team or even in IPL, there's much more expectation, much more pressure that’s always there. But when you start playing there, you learn how to develop and play differently because it is the pace you face is quicker.

“I feel everyone should know that they are selected for a reason and you have to take ownership and what you've learned so far."

Sixteen teams feature at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup, with 12 sides progressing to the next stage of the competition. Four teams will then move through to the semi-finals beginning on 6 February, with the final held on 11 February.

The hosts meet the West Indies at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom in one of two matches on the opening day of the tournament, while Ireland take on the USA at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.
