LIVE: Qualification at stake as New Zealand take on Pakistan
Updates as New Zealand take on Pakistan in the final Group A match at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Toss: New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided to bat first against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
And the White Ferns got off to a strong start, reaching 39/0 at the end of the powerplay with Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer looking in good touch.
Group A all comes down to this, as New Zealand face Pakistan with both teams still holding out hope of qualifying for the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
New Zealand’s equation is simple: win and they join Australia in the semis.
But India will be cheering on their neighbours, as a win for Pakistan should be enough for Women in Blue to progress despite Sunday’s loss to Australia.
There is a scenario in which Pakistan qualify for the knockouts, but they need a huge margin of victory to make it into the final two, which would be a massive upset based on the historic record between these two teams.
However, Pakistan do have skipper Fatima Sana back in the side after her absence from the tournament due to a family tragedy.
What They Said
Pakistan batter Muneeba Ali: "As a batting group, we will have to sit and think how we can increase our scoring areas and what approach we should take in the next match. Because obviously the pool is still open and we have a chance to win a good match with a good margin."
New Zealand bowler Leigh Kasperek: "First and foremost we were looking for the win today so we're really pleased to get that obviously Sri Lanka are really good side so I think the batters did really good to chase what was quite a tricky total. So yeah, I think we can be really pleased with today."
The Teams
New Zealand XI: Suzie Bates, Georgia Plimmer, Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine (capt), Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green, Isabella Gaze (wk), Lea Tahuhu, Rosemary Mair, Eden Carson, Fran Jonas
Pakistan XI: Muneeba Ali (wk), Sidra Amin, Sadaf Shamas, Nida Dar, Omaima Sohail, Aliya Riaz, Fatima Sana (capt), Iram Javed, Syeda Aroob Shah, Nashra Sandhu, Sadia Iqbal
Australia are the only team to have guaranteed a place in the semi-finals of the tournament, with just two matches remaining in the group stage.
The outcome of Group A will be finalised by the result in this fixture, with England and West Indies set to face off on Tuesday with Group B's final shake-up still on the line.
All matches at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 will be held in the two host cities of Dubai and Sharjah.
